What is the gospel?

God is holy and just, meaning God does not turn a blind eye to sin but must punish those who break God’s laws.

Do you think you’re a good person?
Good by God’s standards is morally perfect. Let’s look at God’s laws, the 10 Commandments, to see how we do.

Ever lied?
Stolen?
Said God’s name in vain?
Committed adultery? Jesus says who ever look at a woman or man with lust has committed adultery in the heart.

Truth is, no one is good, no not one (Romans 3:10). God gave the moral law, the 10 Commandments. You and I broke that law and deserve eternal punishment in Hell. Because we have sinned so many times, we store up wrath for ourselves and must face God in judgement.

Here’s the good news:
“But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved”.

What did God do for guilty sinners so that they didn’t have to go to Hell?

Jesus died on the cross for our sins, meaning Jesus took on our sins, took the penalty and suffered God’s wrath, the wrath that we deserved.
On that cross, God laid the sins that WE committed onto Jesus who knew no sin but was TREATED as sin and God poured out His holy wrath onto him. God imputed our sins onto Jesus and imputed Jesus’ perfect righteous onto us. We are then treated as righteous and justified before God.

It’s as if we are in a court of law where we committed a list crimes, and the judge gives us a fine that we could never pay off. Jesus took that fine and paid our debt. That’s what happened on that cross. Jesus paid the fine.

Do you know Jesus’ last words before He died on the cross?
“It is finished”. That’s what Jesus meant on that cross, the debt has been paid.

God demanded a punishment for sin. Only Jesus who lived a perfect and sinless life, a life that we could have never lived, can satisfy God’s wrath. Jesus took the punishment, paid our fine and we are declared legally free!

What must you do to be saved?
Repent and put your faith in Jesus, and God will grant you eternal life. Trust that the finished work of Jesus Christ on the cross alone saves you. God will give you a new heart with new desires to love righteousness.
