🧩I’m working on a thing that can get us to the things. On a process, journey and method. Not the solution. Not a new technology, but the way we built technologies. It’s an idea on how to get us faster to the solutions we need. The ones we need fast, thousands of them.

To keep up with the acceleration of our impact on nature we need to find a way to accelerate our ability to do something about it. As I am fully convinced that on our current trajectory we will hit the iceberg, I’m fully intended to give everything I’ve got in this life to work on that soul purpose: to increase our ability to do something about it.

For my effort on that purpose, I focus my thinking on that one machine that contains all of human ingenuity packed in our pockets and brought everywhere we go; our smartphones. It always felt inevitable to me: the future of that device will determine the future of humankind.

I think the odds for our survival are too low if we let a handful of companies, riding the high waves of hype and commerce, deciding on the modus operandi of that device. They will keep on giving us access in exchange for our data. That is their model, their design. They won’t change. As long as we don’t.

So we shall change. Guided by a new toolset that gives us new abilities. If we want to have any influence on that scenario where we are heading for the iceberg, we should redesign the smartphone. It’s my conclusion after a decade of research and prototyping that we can turn our smartphone into a device that gives us ownership instead of access. And yes, it will still be in exchange for your data. Our software can only be of intelligent use to humans if it can process the right data. This was underlined by a world in lockdown. The challenge seems to be how to create a tool that people will trust enough to share their data.

I’ve made a blueprint to meet that challenge and I am here to talk about it. 💡
