A third generation Pentecostal preacher (stamped from the classic shout-stomper mold) Bishop Stephen White treads heavily on sacred ground with his autobiographical treatise "The Evolution Of a Bishop." Leaving behind the safe harbor of lukewarm, mundane mainstream "religion" (or as the author declares "Churchology") White rows for the deeper waters of "Kingdom" living, here and now. The shift, the ongoing change from Christianity to Christ Consciousness is where Bishop White is leading the reader; tough questions are addressed, sacred cows are tipped and the religiousity of church culture is shed in the light of ideas like progressive thought, inclusive evangelism and by truly embracing Christ's dictate to love unconditionally (including oneself!) A breezy, compelling opening statement of Faith-in-progress, the book is also a somewhat curious read, in that one can see White offering not only well thought out ideas, but also still wrestling with what some of those ideas mean to a man with 30 years of traditional Christian upbringing and values. After all, evolution is a process and the answers aren't always immediate. But at-least Bishop White is brave enough to ask the questions most of us think but dare not speak out loud. More conservative thinkers might find themselves occasionally challenged by some of White's "progress," but that's pretty much the point of book.
