Chris Campbell is a DJ/music journalist and nationally-renowned tastemaker who has written for publications such as Upscale, Smooth Jazz News, Soul Interviews and Examiner. His books The Essential Neo Soul and Essential Neo Soul 2.0 provided a spotlight of the progressive soul music movement and are the only publications of its kind to cover its history.
Campbell is also a correspondent for NPR (National Public Radio) curating global underground music for segments such as “Heavy Rotation” and “Songs We Love.” As host of the Progressive Underground (as heard on NPR-affiliate 101.9 FM WDET), he takes listeners on a multi-genre musical odyssey by way of creative hand-picked playlists, exclusive artist interviews and atmospheric style mixes.
Campbell also hosts international acts at various regional music festivals and events such as the Detroit Jazz Fest, Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre “Jazzy Wednesday Series,” the DSO (Detroit Symphony Orchestra) “Paradise Jazz Series” and “Conversations at the Cube” and is a go-to personality for commentary on the regional music, film and cultural arts scenes.
As a DJ, Campbell has hosted and spun at various after-parties for numerous motion picture red carpet affairs, artist listening parties and national award show after-parties.
