BIG OPINIONS (an incomplete list):
On AUTHENTICITY:
👉Authenticity happens in front of (and is affected by) an audience.
👉We have to stop thinking of authenticity as an individual pursuit and start thinking of it as a community practice.
👉Asking people to be authentic at work is impossible until we address biased perception and harmful power structures.
On COMMUNICATION:
⚡️There’s no such thing as “fearless” public speaking.
⚡️Everyone has vocal fry, “ums and uhs” are not the death of your gravitas, upspeak doesn’t necessarily mean that you’re unsure of yourself, and “like” is a grammatically useful and versatile word.
⚡️Stop penalizing feminine-coded language and women’s voices!
On CONFIDENCE:
⭐️Fear is the cost of admission to an interesting life.
⭐️All the best people have imposter syndrome. People without (some) imposter syndrome break the world.
⭐️You don’t need to be “fearless” to be confident. Fear is natural, and fear means you CARE.
On THEATER:
🎤We must wrench apart the Venn Diagram of “genius” and “asshole”.
🎤“If you can imagine doing ANYTHING ELSE, do it” is dumb advice for artists (and others). See also: “Never have a Plan B.”
🎤The you-ness of you is the most important thing to bring to an audition room.
🎤We need mentors, not gatekeepers.
