Clauses of Contrast:
- When you want to make two statements that contrast each other or make each other appear unexpected or surprising.
- Use these words & phrases: Despite, In Spite of, Although, even-though, though, While, etc.
- Though is less formal and it is used in the middle of sentences.
“She is a nice girl, though she does lie sometimes”
- After Despite and In Spite of, use a noun, a verb + ing, or “… the fact that + subject + verb”
“Despite the fact that he is very young, he is very good driver”
Clauses of Purpose:
-When you want to explain the reason for an action (why somebody does something)
-Use these words & phrases: In order that, In order to, so as to, so that, for the purpose of, so
“I am going to train hard so that I can defeat her the next time we play tennis!”
“The government mandated wearing masks in order to slow down the spread of the virus”
