Soap + candle maker, writer, parent
Before March 2020 I made my living as a freelance writer. However, since Covid reshaped the world, I’ve been home with my kids, and writing requires concentration I lack with everyone home and no place to go. So when the kids are in Zoom school I sneak down to my basement to channel my creativity and pandemic-world anxiety into swirling soap and pouring hot wax.
Why Soap and Candles?
This is a hard time, so full of uncertainty and loss. I found myself drawn to making soap because it literally repels germs. And the graphic nature of patterns I could make in Cold process soap felt like making art and doing chemistry experiments at the same time. I have watched and learned a lot from YouTube videos by Ariana Arsenault, Tree Marie Soap Works, and I Dream in Soap (to name just a few).
As for candles, this past fall I was looking for a way to add light—physical, metaphorical, anything, and I started watching Candle Science and Stanley Hand Crafted YouTube videos and in no time I was making soy wax container candles that lit up our rooms in a dark time.
Now I’m learning how to bring the things I make to others. I’m here to learn, but I’d love to share what I glean along the way.
