Clubhouse’s unique blocking feature raises an alarming question about whether a user should be given power to block anyone she dislikes from participating in a public conversation that she happens to be a part of.
The answer is obviously NO. Letting a person define the context and accessibility of a conversion in a public room where she may just be one of many speakers on stage is ridiculous.
If there is a particular person we don’t want to speak to, listen to, or be listened by, we could simply leave the conversation.
If that person says something offensive so as to disrupt the ongoing conversation, it’s in every moderator’s power and right to kick him out.
If no moderator does what we think needs to be done, then this isn’t a room we want to stay in.
If we worry that what we say might be misconstrued by a certain potential audience, we should select a room with an audience we feel comfortable with, instead of selecting an audience we feel comfortable for a room.
The goal of this club is to voice a clear objection to CH’s current blocking feature and promote a series of changes:
-Allow someone to join a public room if they are blocked only by speakers
-Let users to use Block to merely hide their whereabouts from another user
-Add a new feature of “Join Quietly” to protect users’ privacy
-More efficiently process incidents reported by users who are potential victims of harassment and stalking
We also recommend our members to do the following to make CH community less blocking infested:
-Don’t block people simply because you dislike their opinions
-If possible, unblock someone if you no longer remember why you blocked her at first place
-If you blocked too many users, try not to stay on stage unless you are speaking or intend to speak soon
-Send a message to CH to voice your objection of blocking
-Spread the idea of anti-blocking to your friends, asking them to join us
