Description

A brief introduction

In addition to a glorious history of bravery and cultural richness, the Kirats are one of the oldest settlers of the Kathmandu valley Heritage. Those of a lion nature are known as kirat, meaning lion-hearted people. In addition, it means mountaineers. In Nepal, the ethnic group Kirati is indigenous. There are also ethnic groups such as Dhimal, Hayu, Koch, Thami, Tharu, Chepang, and Surel that consider themselves to be Kiratis. Their courage is well known. In addition, they speak a language, have a religion, and have a culture all of their own. A lot of their ornaments are made of gold and precious stones. Their customs are very colorful and rich. Kirats compose the majority of Nepal's eastern hilly region, which includes several districts.

The Gurkha Brigade
A number of Gurkha regiments were reorganized ethnically, with four regiments consisting of Kirati tribes: Yakkha, Limbu, Rai, and Sunuwar. The 7th Gurkha Rifles was raised in 1902 and recruited Rai, Limbu, Yakkha, and Sunuwar from eastern Nepal. As part of a broad reorganization on 13 September 1901, the 10th Gurkha Rifles continued to recruit in the kirat tribal areas of eastern Nepal.11 The regiment consisted entirely of non-optee kiratis.

A Sino-Tibetan ethnic group, the Kirati people are also spelled Kirant and Kiranti. These people inhabit the Himalayas, primarily the Eastern Himalaya, extending eastward from Nepal to North East India (mainly in the Indian state of Sikkim and the northwestern hilly districts of West Bengal, such as Darjeeling and Kalimpong).

Etymology
"Kirat" means people with lion-like hearts or with lion-like traits. Also known as mountain people, Kirata is a name given to a group of people in Northeastern India and Eastern Nepal.

Kiratology
As part of Kiratology, researchers look at the history, cultures, languages, and literatures of Kirat ethnic groups in Nepal, Darjeeling, Sikkim, Assam, Myanmar, and China, among others. The Mundum or Mundhum is the book of knowledge on origin, history, culture, occupation and traditions of Kirati people. Noted scholars on Kiratology so far is Iman Xin Chemjong who did ground breaking contributions on Kirat Mundum/Mundhum, history, cultures, and languages. After Chemjong, PS Muringla, BB Muringla and Bairagi Kainla also contributed towards Kiratology.
