The Niger Delta is Africa’s most important oil-producing region, and one of the most polluted places on earth.

The people of Niger Delta region comprises of Delta State, Bayelsa State, Rivers State, Edo state, Cross River state, and Akwa Ibom state. This states are known as the south south region. However for geopolitical reasons IMO state, Abia state and Ondo state were added to the region.

For decades oil spills have been damaging the environment and devastating lives in this part of Nigeria.

Air, land and water have all been contaminated, with studies reporting devastating effects on residents’ health and livelihoods.

Vast areas of the state’s
waterways and mangrove swamps – one of the most diverse ecosystems in Africa – have been destroyed or put at risk.

Farmland has been cloaked in oil, contaminating crops and exposing people to high levels of heavy metals such as chromium, lead and mercury.

Meanwhile, gas flares – where natural gas associated with petroleum extraction is burned off in the atmosphere – have filled the air with pollutants, and created acid rain.

A research, cited by the interim report of the Bayelsa State Oil and Environmental Commission, has found that pollution is placing communities at heightened risk of kidney damage, as well as diseases such as cancer, diabetes, Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s. Also increased cases of diarrhoea and child malnutrition.

In the Niger Delta, our people’s rights are rarely provided for, and frequently violated. Many of our people who live in the region experience very poor living standards.

The abundance of natural resource wealth from the region’s oil and gas reserves, coupled with weak governance, has produced the ‘resource curse’ maintaining this injustice.

The combination of natural resource wealth and weak governance enable those in positions of political and other power to benefit disproportionately from oil money. The owners of the land are left in poverty and injustice
