Mental health is an important aspect of one’s overall health and well-being. However, the importance of mental health has been historically overlooked on the continent of Africa. Due to many challenges, including poverty, infectious diseases, maternal and child mortality, war and conflict, mental health is more than often neglected on Africa’s health development agenda.

Africa still has a long way to go in terms of mental health awareness and care. Mental health is highly stigmatized and there are not enough mental health facilities, resources, or professional and competent mental health providers for the people.

Despite all of the issues, progress is slowly, but steadily being made. Many African countries are making attempts to invest more in mental health and encourage individuals to seek professional mental health services.

We are here to advocate for the African mental health, to continue to support the normalization of mental health issues, and to prioritize the implementation of appropriate and effective mental health treatment and interventions with African population groups.
