So many of the world’s life-changing and life-improving innovations have emerged from research labs at the world’s leading universities. From new therapeutics, medical devices, and diagnostics, to clean energy and water remediation, to advanced materials and communication technologies, to cybersecurity, data compression, AI/ML, and more, these inventions have had an enormous impact on the world. Tech transfer offices work with the faculty and student inventors behind these innovations, helping to evaluate the inventions for patentability and commercial potential; filing IP protection where appropriate; identifying potential partners from industry, venture capital, and the entrepreneurship community; and then licensing those inventions to existing companies or forming new companies to bring them to market. These technologies go on to make life better for society overall, while along the way creating jobs, strengthening communities, and pushing the boundaries of knowledge.
