Activists Launch the “Yelp” for Prisons

Two passionate criminal justice reform activists, Jorge Hurtado and Jared Claybrook, have announced their official public launch of a rating and reviewing platform for prisons, jails, and juvenile detention centers. Often described as the “Yelp” for prisons, Conspiraci.com is the only existing platform dedicated to offering incarcerated individuals and their families a chance to rate and share their experiences with facilities across the country.

The United States locks up more people than any other country in the world, hence the term “mass incarceration.” Recent efforts at criminal justice reform have highlighted not only the sheer prevalence of incarceration in this country but also the opacity, injustice, and defectiveness of the entire criminal justice system. Due to the lack resources to help them navigate the system, many people caught up in the system report feeling lost and alone, with the prison population being disproportionately impacted by mental health issues.

Founded in March of 2018 as a veteran- and black-owned business, Conspiraci was created to help increase transparency and communication about prison conditions and treatments, while also hopefully increasing accountability for prison personnel and operators. The reviews, among other things, will provide useful information for family visitations and also shed light on facility conditions. Conspiraci also plans to incorporate other types of services onto the platform, including resources supporting reentry and rehabilitation.
