Meet Midori Larsen (@midorilarsen), a composer, pianist, and taiko player who writes music for chamber ensembles featuring Japanese and Western musical instruments and elements. Her music explores her sense of self and life purpose as a Japanese immigrant woman artist in New York City. Her recent past works include Yukiwatari, multi-movement music accompanying the original story by Kenji Miyazawa, featuring shinobue, piano, taiko and percussion. Her current work, “Crossing the Seas,” is inspired by her late grandmother’s stories of migration from Okinawa Island to Tokyo in the late 1930s and the reflection of her own journey, from Yokosuka City to Los Angeles and to New York City in the 1990s and the 2000s. Midori was an Artist-in-Residence for Asian American Arts Alliance in Winter 2020-2021.
