The word Sankofa comes from the Akan people of Ghana. It’s literal translation; “to go back and get it.” One of the Adinkra symbols for Sankofa depicts a mythical bird flying forward with its head turned backward retrieving an egg from it's back in midair. Symbolizing we must retrieve what we have left behind, our origins, our youth, our traditions, the wisdom of our elders in order to move forward.

Founded in the spirit of great leaders and artists, Sankofa.org turns its attention to the most pressing issues of our time. We educate, motivate, and activate artists and allies in service of grassroots movements and equitable change. Using art and culture as a tool for communicating messages of hope, creating a heart-opening and engaging community to action, Sankofa focuses on issues of injustice that disproportionately affect the disenfranchised, the oppressed, and the underserved, which left unaddressed will continue to impact the lives of too many individuals and remain a scar on our nation’s moral character.
