Towards the beginning of the end of colonialism the only certainty about identities, minorities and sovereignty has been the troubling rise of uncertainty about their status and interrelationship. While the formulation of major world orders commanded global attention solutions to minority problems remained blocked and off the agenda to which these communities suffer to this day.

Prime examples include Chechnya and Yugoslavia, the conflict of disputed Kashmir between India & Pakistan, or the Sikh liberation movement under the tyrannical regime of Indira Gandhi towards an independent & self-governed secular state. As the archetypal international organization and microcosm of the international system, the UN became the de facto criterion of statehood, further politicizing rather than objectifying the recognition process, once admitted the benefits of recognition for a state included the presumption of sovereignty.
