The focus of Ms. Audrey’s House is on ordinary people, doing extraordinary things. I invite people I meet to come in and talk about what they do and who they are, and what their passions are. There is no hard-wired structure to the show, leaving it open for whatever happens to happen, to happen. The format: two people visiting a mutual friend’s home and sitting on the couch talking and laughing, discovering mutual interests and building networks, with the world listening in.
My interests are wide and eclectic, and I believe this is what makes Ms. Audrey’s House so unique: I am open to new experiences and new people, and want them all to know each other. Also, I prefer to see my network as a complex, multi-layered spider web; each thread interconnected, with me in the middle watching, learning and enjoying it all.
For my current show I have one in-studio guest, and one online guest who typically calls in via Skype. In a two-hour show that gives us enough time to interview each guest individually, then both guests get to know one another via conversation on whatever topic happens to interest them. I always allow my guests to initiate the open discussion, with me as moderator. This is primarily because I want the flow to be natural and the guests to be relaxed (as with a real-life visit, them getting to know one another, and myself sitting back and drinking tea (or something)), with the added benefit of removing the possibility of unintentionally cutting myself off from a learning opportunity.
On a one-hour show, I typically only have time for one guest. I try to give my guests room to say what they want and express themselves freely. This is the way Ms. Audrey’s House began: with Ms. Audrey and one guest, chatting over coffee.
I encourage anyone coming on for the first time to listen to my podcast archive to get the ‘feel’ of the show. Everyone’s opinion is heard and respected, even (or especially) when there is disagreement. It is a requirement for my friends, and for my show. I believe this makes the show much more interesting and fun and the discussion much livelier. I have yet to have an episode that devolved into something ugly or unproductive, which tells me that most people just want to learn and be heard.
Be respectful of others: This should be self-explanatory, but we have to keep explaining it. If you can’t give the respect and dignity to others you expect for yourself, you’re in the wrong room.
One mic at a time. : Ms. Audrey’s House is a safe space for open communication. Sometimes, everyone had something to add. Please respect one another’s time on the mic, and don’t talk over one another. Speaking of which:
Brevity is your friend. : We all want to hear you and share your knowledge. However, the rest of us want to speak as well. NO MICROPHONE HOGS!! Get to the point, please.
