What is Irish Republicanism?
Irish Republicanism is a Socialist, anti-imperialist ideology that was founded by Irish revolutionaries who were inspired by the French Revolution. This movement came to an end when Wolf Tonne (the leader), was captured before committing execution-cheating suicide. Socailist thought was added to this movement by revolutionaries from the Great Famine, later being refined by James Connolly in the early 20th century. James Connolly was a Scottish-Irish Marxist who served in the British Army before defecting to fight for Irish freedom, later becoming famous due to his selfless acts in the Easter Rising, leading to his execution. Irish Republicanism has been expanded upon by revolutionaries of the Anglo-Irish War such as James Larkin and The Troubles such as Seamus Costello.
