We’re moving to Story Sorcerers 🎩 Same day and time.
Join our weekly Beta Reader Book Club! Share your work in progress (WIP) or finished novel, receive feedback, and help others improve their writing. Here's how our process works:
Step 1: Submit up to 7500 words of your work to a moderator who will share it in Google Docs for everyone to review.
Step 2: The first hour of our meeting is devoted to reading the submitted works. If you haven't had time before the meeting, this gives you a chance to catch up.
Step 3: After the reading hour, we discuss the works. We highlight what we loved and offer constructive suggestions on areas that might need improvement.
Step 4: The discussion opens up for your questions and thoughts. We're here to help you grow your work as much as you wish.
Reciprocity is Key
If you want others to read and critique your work, do the same for theirs. We understand if life gets in the way sometimes, but try to read others' work whenever possible. If you're new, we may ask you to critique others' work for a few weeks before submitting your own. However, this is a guideline, not a strict rule, and exceptions may occur. Attendance is appreciated, but we understand if it's not always possible.
How to provide safe and constructive feedback:
1. Begin with Positives: Start by highlighting the strengths and positive aspects of the piece to create a supportive tone.
2. Be Specific and Objective: Be specific, focus on particular examples, while remaining objective and avoiding personal preferences.
3. Offer Explanations and Reasoning: Help the writer understand why certain aspects could be improved by offering thoughtful explanations and reasoning behind your suggestions.
4. Maintain a Respectful Tone: Use a respectful and supportive tone, avoiding harsh language, derogatory remarks, or personal attacks.
5. Focus on the Work, Not the Writer: Direct your comments towards the writing itself rather than making assumptions or judgments about the writer's abilities or attributes.
6. Balance Criticism with Encouragement: Strive for a balance between constructive criticism and positive reinforcement, acknowledging the writer's efforts and potential.
7. Allow for Discussion and Clarification: Invite the writer to ask questions and engage in a discussion about their work, facilitating deeper understanding and camaraderie within the group.
Let's grow together in our writing journey!
Be kind
Regardless of if giving critique or otherwise, be kind to one another.
Give constructive criticism.
It isn’t enough to simply say you liked a part or didn’t like it. Be more specific in a supportive way that empowers.
If people read your work, you should be reading theirs.
Life gets in the way sometimes, it’s understandable. But please ensure that you read other people’s work too, if you want them to read yours.
