Description

“𝗣𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗿𝘃𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝗧𝗿𝗮𝗱𝗶𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝗪𝗵𝗶𝗹𝗲 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗡𝗲𝘄 𝗢𝗻𝗲𝘀“.

____________________________________________ It is a community that many have yet to fully understand. Thousands of people in the United States identify as Black-Indigenous/Afro-Indigenous, having both indigenous and African American lineages. Their lives raise important questions about conceptions of indigeneity, revealing the complex and often vexed relationships between cultures in the Americas.

Audiences will have the opportunity to explore guest speakers who are culture bearers, healers, medicine men/women, shamans, and tribal leaders who, through their practices, act as catalyzing agents in our communities and challenge legacies of colonial disempowerment and the education of our people.

Black folks come from a long line of storytellers, and we seek out the stories that shed light on who we are in this country. We have learned how to tell the story as it came from Africa to Opelika, Alabama; from Commerce, Georgia; and even from a reservation in Oklahoma. It came with us from the islands and with the Great Migration.

The late Virginia Hamilton, the author of The People Could Fly—a revered children’s book of African American storytelling—said that storytelling was the first opportunity for black folks to represent themselves as anything other than property. As Congressman John Lewis, a standard bearer of the civil rights movement and equity in this country, says, “The movement without storytelling, is like birds without wings.”
