This is a club for the descendants of Kittamaquund, in order to learn, network, and collaborate on projects that further the science, knowledge, and preservation of this history.
Circa 1622, the Piscataway tribe, built a town they called Kittamaqundi on Piscataway Creek near the modern day town of Piscataway, Prince George's County, Maryland. When the English first visited the town, in 1634, they learned it was named after the relatively new Tayac- Kittamaquund, who they said assumed power after killing his brother Wannas.
In 2014, Shawn and Lois Potter did a genetic study in order to identify relatives of Mary Kittamaquund, the daughter of Tayac Kittamaquund. Historians have long disagreed about the number of children born to Mary Kittamaquund, due to a lack of records, of which many were lost during the War of 1812.
The 2014 DNA study however, revealed that descendants of Katherine and Richard Marsham and three descendants of Mary and Charles Beaven, representing six separate lineages, inherited at least sixteen matching segments of Native American DNA on chromosomes 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 13, 15, 16, 20, and 22. These matching chromosomal segments point to a common Native American ancestor, who, is believed to have been the mother of Katherine and Mary. Considering this DNA evidence in light of contemporary records, it now seems certain Mary Kittamaquund and Giles Brent were the parents of Katherine, wife of Richard Marsham, and Mary, wife first of John Fitzherbert and second of Charles Beaven.
This club is for descendants of Kittamaquund to learn, network, and collaborate on projects to further the science, knowledge, and history of this lineage/ legacy. The story of Kittamaquund, the original inhabitants of the Potomac, and the collision of cultures when Europeans arrived, is central to the foundation of the formation of the United States.
