There are plans for unsustainable, environmentally destructive developments in Maradhoo, Maradhoo-Feydhoo, Hithadhoo.
Massive lands to be reclaimed in all three islands, causing inevitable damage to already distressed coral and mangrove ecosystems.
The sand would be excavated from bait fish collection sites, negativity impacting their local fisherman's livelihoods.
Sediments would devastate enormous sea grass fields, nurseries for countless juvenile fish.
Whilst we should be investing in building for climate resilience, using natural resources that we already have - blue marine ecosystems like mangroves and sea grass collect far more carbon from the atmosphere than their terrestrial counterparts. Essential in mitigating effects of climate change. These development would irrecoverably damage crucial ecosystems.
