Its most prominent activity was the launching of Manushi—A Journal about Women & Society. It became globally celebrated for having pioneered human rights/ women’s rights journalism and scholarship that is culturally rooted and avoided viewing our society through the prism of borrowed ideologies and dogmas.

But Manushi has always been more than a journal. It has worked for reform of government policies and laws that have an adverse impact on the livelihoods of marginalized groups in addition to fighting and winning legal battles on their behalf in courts.

In order to retain its autonomy & independence Manushi Journal said no to commercial ads and Manushi Trust took a firm policy decision not to seek or get grants from the government or from foreign agencies as most NGOs do. Manushi Journal survived solely on the support of its readers while most of those who worked for Manushi did so as labour of love. Some years ago, the print edition of Manushi ceased publication under trying circumstances but it is now in the process of reinventing itself.

In 2020, Manushi Trust set up Centre for Law, Justice & Civilizational Studies with a view to focusing on research, investigations and publications that:
a) Shed new light on neglected or grossly misrepresented issues, especially those concerning women, India’s civilizational heritage and faith traditions;
b) Counter systematic spread of misinformation by the mainstream media especially on issues that play a divisive role in society;
c) Promote informed activism among concerned citizens instead of interventions based on mere emotive responses as has happened with many draconian laws enacted at the behest of emotionally charged campaigns without serious consideration of issues at hand;
d) Offer not just mere critiques of government policies, laws and administrative misdeeds but also well thought out solutions based on ground level research and direct engagement with the concerned groups;
e) Makes common cause with all those working for a cultural & civilizational renaissance after centuries of living under foreign yoke.
