Shamanism is the world’s oldest form of spiritual expression. We can easily trace it back 40,000 years yet there is anthropological evidence suggesting it may go back 100,000-300,000 years ago to the Middle Paleolithic Period.
Shamanism developed within a time in human evolution when most, if not all, the world’s indigenous populations embraced the concept which we now call Animism.
(It must be understood that the words Shamanism and Animism were not utilized by their ancient – or even modern – adherents. These are European anthropological impositions placed upon the beliefs and practices of indigenous populations.)
The core understanding of Animism, and its offspring Shamanism, is that all ‘beings’ (human and other-than-human) have spirit, soul, life, a form of consciousness and volition.
Shamanism is a practice of relationship with all that is. Humans. Fauna. Flora. Rocks. Wind. Water. Fire. Lightning. Spirit/Source/Creator. Or as the Lakota People of North American say: Mitákuye Oyás’iŋ – translated ‘All My Relations.’
Shamanism is the Root from which all the world's major religions and spiritual practices grew and provides us an ancient and modern way to relationally engage with Life.
