The International Visitor Leadership Program (IVLP) is the U.S. Department of State’s premier professional exchange program. IVLP connects current and emerging foreign leaders, in a variety of fields, with their American counterparts through short-term visits to the United States to build mutual understanding on foreign policy issues and cultivate lasting relationships. Nearly 200,000 leading individuals have participated in the program, including over 500 current and former chiefs of state and heads of government, and thousands of leaders from the public and private sectors. Since founded by Nelson Rockefeller in 1940, there have been thousands of worldwide potential leaders who have taken part in IVLP. Margaret Thatcher, Tony Blair, Indira Gandhi, Nicholas Sarkozy, Dilma Roussef, Daniel T. Arap Moi, and Julia Gillard were some of the famous IVLP participants. The most famous Egyptian participants were the former President Anwar Sadat (1968).
