The first signs of gladiators (named after their sword type, named Gladius) date back to around 264 BC, 2,300 years ago, when Rome was still a republic ruled by an empire. At that time, the wealthy Romans held lavish funeral ceremonies for high-ranking people in order to make themselves important. Part of the lavish program at the event was the violent and deadly battle of gladiatorial swordsmen called gladiators.
What they were wearing showed where they came from
In the old days, most gladiators were captives or slaves brought by the Romans from the countries they fought. The clothes the gladiators wore during battle depended on their origin. At that time there were three main regions: the Samnites (from Italy), the Guls (from France) and the Thracians (from present-day Bulgaria). These battles had not yet reached the great battlefields of ancient Rome. Funeral wreaths were usually found in the ancient Roman cattle market
